ISO 15848, TA-Luft and a new five-valve manifold
TA-Luft is well-known in the German and European processing industries as the guarantee for high quality stem sealings. But what guarantee do customers get from TA-Luft compliant Industrial Valves and what's behind the relatively new ISO 15848 standard? Markus Haffner (Franz Schneider GmbH) reports....
Tightening of the standards
In this video interview, Fred Turco (President of Turco Valve Supply) discusses how standards relating to for example fugitive emissions are becoming more and more important....
Tightness in gasketed flanged unions
In this article, ESA member Francisco Montero looks at the background and challenges in gasketed flanged unions. Also considered are new standards for calculating and testing in the USA, Germany and Europe....
Answers to fugitive emission problems
At the moment, the attention of standards is mainly concentrating on the sealing criteria. According to Thierry Ledauphin (R& D Manager at Latty International) other functional aspects of the sealing system should not be overlooked, such as easy manoeuvre, fire safe solution, chemical compatibility, no corrosion, without forgetting the needs on the field: the imperative of better and cheaper production which obliges the companies to optimise their maintenance and rationalise the various qualities of sealing products....
Emission control achievable with proper maintenance and selection
Emission control is an issue which remains in the spotlight for valve manufacturers and end users alike. With an increasing volume and diversity of legislation in place around the world, preventing emissions through correct product selection and appropriate maintenance has become a priority. Mr. Michael Adkins from Swagelok shares his views on this hot topic....
Emission measurements of industrial valves acc to TA Luft and EN ISO 15848-1
As the title suggests, in this article Professor Dr.-Ing Alexander Riedl looks into the implications of measuring emissions according to TA Luft and EN ISO 15848-1 and points out some important conclusions....
Experiences with API standard 622 type testing of process valve packings
The publication of the API 622 specification has marked a departure from the common method of evaluating packing performance as a part of valve qualification tests. Instead, API 622 evaluates packing performance in a standardized fixture, outside the influence of a particular valve’s design. This article will outline the use of API 622 in tests performed by Yarmouth Research and Technology. The general experiences performing API 622 emissions tests were positive ones. This paper describes the test procedures, our results in performing the tests on a braided flexible graphite packing, and the lessons that were learned....
Factory Practice on Latest Fugitive Emission Standard
The most widely used standards to detect fugitive emissions of valve packing are ISO15848-1 standard and API622 standard. The two standards are used to evaluate the fugitive emissions of valve packing, but their test conditions and evaluation methods are different, says George Gao, Neway Valve (Suzhou) Co. Ltd....
Fugitive emissions and control valves
This paper by Etienne Venner, Emerson Process Management, France, describes the history of the development of the fugitive emissions requests, the standards committees and manufacturers’ reactions to them. Also described are the approach and issues a control valve manufacturer has to deal with to meet the various requirements on fugitive emissions. It is recognised also that control valves by their function of continuous movement have more tendency to wear out than on/off valves and are therefore more easily subject to packing leakage. ...
Fugitive emissions: guidelines for successful valve upgrades
Due to the upcoming emission legislation in Europe, most chemical and process industry plants will have to adhere to strict legislation when replacing sealing elements during shut-downs, argue By Ralf Vogel, (Engineering Manager, Burgmann Packings Limited); Stefan Danner (Applications Engineer, PSS Division, Burgmann Industries GmbH & Co. KG.) and Bob Smith (Product Marketing Manager, PSS Division, Burgmann Industries GmbH & Co. KG) ...
Seat leakage rates in on/off valves
This article by Kristian Lund Jepsen (Ramboll Oil & Gas) considers allowable seat leakage rates in new gate, ball, plug, globe and check valves. The article shall mainly be seen in relation to valves in the oil & gas industry, but the referred EN 12266-1 is also widely used for industrial valves generally....
Update on Fugitive Emission Standards at Valve World 2010
Both fugitive emission international standards API 622 and ISO 15848 are currently being revised by various committees and forums. Meetings in France and the USA have taken place. First indications are that changes are being made to make these standards. So what are they? What impact will they have within the industry?...
