Getting active in the hazardous zone

By David Sear

In many industries involving batch processes, fieldbus technology is seen as an exciting way to enhance efficiency, safety and profitability. However, careful consideration is required in order to select the most cost-effective system, especially where hazardous areas are concerned. Valve World therefore visited the UK to talk to Ciba’s Kevin Womack about the pros and cons of various automation techniques. Mr Kevin Womack is responsible for automation, DCS and control systems at Ciba’s Bradford and Grimsby sites and is a member of a global team looking at site standardisation.

“Fieldbus is buzzword in the industry right now. Automation of batch processes is seen as a promising route to save money and fieldbus technology has much to offer. However, care is needed otherwise you can easily incur unexpected costs. But the big question right now is: how relevant are fieldbuses in hazardous areas? You must not forget to factor in some important issues otherwise you may be in for a nasty shock as the project progresses. For example, issues such as the costs of design, the need for add-on extras such as special cables, tees, etc, as well as the price of the actuated device.”
At the start of the interview, it is clear that Mr Womack has a good understanding of the reality of automation technologies. He has also witnessed at first hand how costs can vary according to the type of environment.
